1. Psychic Research, Canvas Book

I am exploring books as a painted medium, combining image, text and found objects in books of acrylic paint on canvas pages. These painted works are at once books, and ideas about books. There is the physical object in book-like form, though unrelated to traditional notions of book-making such as fine binding and typography. In addition, the content is usually a play on components of books: chapter and plot, covers and pages which turn in a fixed sequence, drawing attention to the imperatives and authority of the form itself.

Primarily, these painted works are about the kind of information that can be communicated in a hybrid form combining image and text. They are about language and time embodied in a complex and sensate sculptural object.

Psychic Research 1995
18" h x 44.5" full spread
One of a kind painted book, acrylic and found objects on canvas with xerox transfers.
The triangular canvas pages in a French Door binding, form different configurations and patterns when opened in random order.
Chapter titles are applied and over painted canvas letters:
"Dream States; The Voice of Nature; Darkest Night; Something Outside Our Reach;
Knowing the Names of Things; Baring the Heart."
Additional text is typeset on paper and collaged to the page. There are several circular holes which allow the viewer to see through to the next page.
This is the last in a series of 18 painted canvas books, created in New Mexico from 1989-1995.
