SELF PORTRAITS AND OTHER FICTIONS, 2001 Self Portraits and Other Fictions addresses questions of beauty and self-image. It sheds light on the complexities of how women have been represented throughout history as models of ideal beauty. Once I had completed painting my own face as it transformed after plastic surgery, I looked to notable faces from art history to complete the series.
The medium is acrylic paint over gessoed 4-ply board on wood mounts. Layers of paint create a chalky surface reminiscent of frescoes. The paintings are distressed by sanding and a second or third face may be layered over the first. Each painting measures 4.25′ H X 3.25″ W
